Polyphasic Experiments - my daily running commentary
All nap times have a duration of either 20 or 23 minutes, unless stated otherwise.
NOTE: As of 9 Nov ‘06, I got tired of posting the same approximate times over and over, and I began copy/pasting and altering the important bits.
And as of 13 Nov ‘06 I got behind in posting all of this, and stopped. I’ll start again when I smooth out my schedule and officially start the 2hr/day challenge time.

(started new polyphasic schedule. Will be easing into it over the next couple of days)
(Seem to be back on schedule again. But boy do I have some serious flatulence! Okay, guess you didn’t want to know that)
(The aftermath. Serious oversleeping trouble. My six pm nap was at a friends house)
(Today the company went quad biking as a team building exercise. I was initially going to postpone my 2pm nap to 3pm, which was lunchtime.
However the planning for the day went totally off, and I was forced to skip my nap entirely! This caused an hour oversleep, and much more trouble the next day)
(Felt very good in the early hours, and perhaps for the first time was able to concentrate properly on doing some work at night. I had the 30 minute bath, but read a book instead of dozing off. Felt good.)
(I’m not going to guarantee recording exact nap times except for unusual situations. Times are near identical every day now anyway and I’ll start using sleeptracker soon. Cheated with that bath again.)
(Struggled a bit, but made it through. Cheated a bit by lying in the bath for 30 minutes, semi-conscious.)
(Had things going on at lunchtime, making for a late nap again. Overslept later)
(Nothing eventful really. I think I’m quite sleep deprived still.)
(Thanks to family, I missed a nap by over 2 hours. This had some serious impact on the rest of my day, ruining my total)
(I can feel a good whack of sleep deprivation settling in. Hope it’s temporary. Eyes burn. Using eyedrops. Took 3/4 dose of thermogenics following a serious workout)
OLDER COMMENTARY:
These statistics represent how I feel during the day while on a polyphasic sleep schedule. They are unfortunately subjective in nature.
The values represented are Run Number (attempt), Day, Time, Sleepiness, Fatigue, Mental Fatigue, Hunger,Thirst and comments - in that order. If you want to analyse it, copy and paste them into a .csv file and open in Microsoft Excel.

At the time of this writing, I am on run #3. My second run was 10 days, which is my longest. It was upset by social pressures, but was very successful up to that time.
3, 0, 15:01, 2, 1, 3, 0, 0, napped at 11am and having another now. last night was monophasic and I feel groggy
3, 0, 22:26, 7, 1, 6, 0, 1, feeling very sleepy. struggling. can’t concentrate. going onto treadmill
3, 0, 22:41, 2, 3, 3, 0, 4, treadmill helped a lot. sweating like a pig but awake
3, 1, 00:42, 6, 2, 5, 0, 5, dozed off in short spells. going to exercise and shower.
3, 1, 02:48, 4, 1, 4, 0, 2, struggling a bit. only 10 minutes to next nap. can’t concentrate
3, 1, 10:18, 3, 3, 3, 0, 2, did okay last night despite concentration problems. body seems to have forgotten last run. eyes are bloodshot. pulled a muscle in my arm during exercise.
3, 1, 12:08, 2, 2, 2, 0, 1, feel better after nap. still tired though. hoping things get better. arm is sore when I sleep on it at my desk.
3, 1, 22:38, 3, 2, 3, 0, 0, tried KFC 2 piece chicken chips and coleslaw. felt stuffed. nap wasn’t great. had heartburn for first time since stopping medication.
3, 2, 01:18, 8, 2, 5, 0, 3, really struggling. wife helped me numerous times. I blame the KFC. bad idea.
3, 2, 06:25, 4, 2, 4, 2, 4, slipped in extra nap and still overslept 2 times. woke up an hour late for work ..o.O
3, 2, 09:10, 2, 4, 2, 0, 2, feel much better. KFC must have worked out of my system. messed up my schedule though.
3, 2, 12:45, 3, 2, 3, 0, 3, I’m pushing my nap out a bit because of the way I messed up the timing last night. Feeling tired so taking the nap now. still getting occasional heartburn and want it to disappear. KFC sucks. seems like I’ve lost weight. oh and pineapple juice is wierd stuff… lol
3, 2, 13:17, 2, 1, 2, 0, 5, Arm aches from sleeping on desk despite trying to avoid it. still a bit sleepy.
3, 3, 06:15, 2, 2, 2, 1, 4, I had some trouble last night again, and put in a few extra naps - some of them quite close together. I’m not sure if this is still aftereffects from KFC or my meal last night. I had mash potato (probably bad) gem squash a few green beans and bismark herring (which tastes really potent to me now and might be a problem… I remember hearing something about vinegar for fruitarians having an amusing effect). I’m going to have to steel myself to pull my schedule right again
3, 3, 09:42, 3, 1, 2, 0, 2, feeling a little tired but Ive really buggered up the routine again. Perhaps I should grab a nap now and at 11am to put myself back on track. I have a party at 7pm and I’ll have to arrange a nap in the middle.
3, 3, 13:06, 1, 1, 2, 1, 2, the wife insists on making lunch despite us not being hungry. hmm. its a cold day today which makes things more uncomfortable. gas heater is out of gas. nice calm day so far though. party tonight
3, 3, 14:25, 0, 2, 1, 0, 4, just had a good workout. feel great. I’ve lost about 5kgs since the day I started the first attempt - and that’s with some extra muscle I’ve built since then.
3, 3, 16:51, 1, 0, 2, 0, 1, going to have another nap at 6 right before leaving for the party. give myself all the edge I can get.
3, 4, 02:00, 4, 1, 3, 0, 0, came back from nieces party. handled it well and got a nap in between. ate a little too much though
3, 4, 06:24, 3, 2, 2, 0, 6, somehow I oversleep to 2 hours. my headphones must have come off and I slept too soundly in my bed in the dark. New rule: semi-darkness and not the bed at night time. I created a new polynap mp3. It should be impossible to sleep through (not that the last one had problems, but I like to do things properly)
3, 4, 17:41, 2, 2, 1, 0, 5, my wife tempted me into sharing a small pizza. tasted great. at least it was vegetarian and I only had 3 pieces. had some lemon juice to help digest it. not the concentrated rubbish - the pure juice.
3, 4, 20:04, 2, 1, 2, 0, 1, watching ‘blast from the past’. will work on the zulu lesson and a bit of secular work thereafter. Feeling okay. determined to do this night properly
3, 4, 21:57, 3, 1, 2, 0, 0, looking forward to a nap. will do some interval training when I wake up, followed by a good shower.
3, 5, 00:09, 5, 2, 4, 0, 1, I’m pretty tired. I noticed I was dozing off in my chair. Thankfully I woke up quickly each time I began to lose consciousness. Exercise…
3, 5, 01:47, 3, 1, 3, 0, 2, Doing okay. Will have to be careful about how I nap at 3am though. It’s my most disastrous nap time at the moment.
3, 5, 09:39, 2, 1, 1, 0, 0, Eyes are a little sore but I feel okay otherwise. Managed to sleep more or less correctly last night.
3, 5, 14:50, 4, 1, 3, 0, 0, Feeling fairly tired but it is just before my next nap - 3am. Probably the sleepiest I’ve been at work.
3, 5, 19:09, 6, 2, 4, 1, 0, I’m craving something to eat but Im not sure what. It’s infuriating. I think it might be a small piece of steak or something. This nap felt like it was a long time coming. Grabbing it right now.
3, 5, 22:32, 4, 2, 3, 0, 0, Tired again. nap in 30 mins. going to do some exercise BEFORE the nap, to try prevent me from passing out.
3, 6, 00:40, 3, 1, 3, 0, 3, I took two naps simply because I felt real tired. Got up and walked around a bit then had the second one.
3, 6, 04:25, 3, 1, 4, 0, 1, Pretty tired but handling it well. Its only half an hour from full sunrise so I dont want to catch an extra nap now 
3, 6, 09:20, 2, 1, 2, 0, 2, Feeling okay. I took an extra nap at 5:30 but my cellphone died causing me to oversleep to 7:30. Quite annoyed.
3, 6, 12:20, 1, 0, 2, 1, 1, Feeling pretty good after a nap, despite feeling uncomfortable about people working around me. I did have to restart my nap after an SMS. New rules: put cellphone on silent ,take phone off the hook, go to the bathroom first (prevents some embarassment), check cellphone battery, put note on back of chair saying ‘be back in 25 minutes’. If nothing else people find it amusing 
3, 6, 16:57, 2, 1, 1, 0, 0, Feeling okay. Leaving work now - will nap when I get home.
3, 7, 00:12, 1, 1, 1, 2, 1, Feeling great - for midnight! Will see if I can not screw up this morning
Had an interesting experience chatting to my brother in law. He thinks Im nuts but that doesnt suprise me. Lectured me about 8 hours sleep so I asked him if I looked tired. ‘Well, I dunno, but…’. Also had a beer. Have 3 minutes to get rid of it in my body 
3, 7, 00:50, 1, 1, 1, 3, 1, Still feeling great except that my back and shoulders are tense. exercise might help. Prepared an itenary for the night. Amazing how much time I have.
3, 7, 08:48, 1, 1, 0, 0, 0, As you can tell by the stats I’m feeling great. I followed my itenary perfectly and didn’t have to add in an extra nap - for the first time on this run/attempt. Things get easier from here as long as I don’t do anything particularly stupid (like go 8 hours at a time 3 days in a row, or eat KFC and macdonalds)
3, 7, 16:29, 2, 0, 1, 1, 0, My 3am nap was delayed by 30 minutes and was interrupted at 17 minutes. ot sure what woke me - my wife trying to call me or the movement past my window. Anyway I still feel pretty good. Eyes are slightly sore but nothing Im not used to. Tonight after my 7am nap which I might take early - I’m going to a friends place for a burger and beer. Let’s see if lemon juice helps digest the fat or if I crash. Hmm. I’m going to freak out if I crash particularly badly. I only just got over the hump.
3, 8, 01:53, 3, 1, 2, 1, 5, I overslept for 2 hours in a very painful sleeping position. My neck is killing me. I overindulged at my friends place on burgers, beer and corn chips, so I’m not suprised I struggled. At least it wasn’t serious *phew*. I did drink some lemon juice and water to help digest things.
3, 8, 08:43, 2, 1, 2, 1, 3, I’m not feeling too bad, but I feel like I had a day stolen from me
This is because I barely put together some of the zulu audio reference when my wife got up and insisted on watching prison break. Watched it, had a nap, and then struggled to motivate myself not to fall asleep. Pity I don’t know what part of the food yesterday is bothering me.
3, 9, 08:09, 2, 0, 2, 1, 2, Wow. an entire day since the last log. If I keep doing this, then this commentary will be pointless. I’m feeling a bit tired, since I’m missing my 7am nap due to my 4 hour accident earlier. Caused by spare ribs, I fear. Another experiment gone wrong.
3, 9, 19:43, 1, 1, 1, 2, 3, I had an extra hour after my nap at 3:30pm. I’m due for another nap now, but not sure what to do about the extra time I slept. I think I’ll add 2 hours onto the time.
3, 10, 04:45, 7, 2, 6, 1, 5, Really feeling it hard tonight. I need to pull myself together…night is almost over. Got at least an unintented extra hour. Why the struggle? This had better resolve itself..
3, 10, 14:42, 2, 0, 2, 2, 2, I was dragged to a religious assembly for half the day, sitting under a tree struggling to hear the speaker. Struggled to stay awake. Had my nap at 11am. Going to have another nap at 3pm.
3, 10, 22:57, 3, 0, 2, 0, 2, I’m a bit sleepy, but nothing serious. My wife seems to have figured out that the peanut cookies make her tired as well. So we might have our culprit for yesterday.

3, 11, 06:31, 4, 1, 4, 1, 2, Slept an extra 2 hour stretch - seems to be purely a matter of detemination that let me down, because I woke up, and convinced myself to close my eyes and lie back. heh.
3, 11, 20:31, 1, 0, 1, 0, 0, I feel great right now, but I’m due for a nap?!? I read an article on mens health that I tested out, and it might just work. I’ll explain it in my blog tomorrow if it works out.
3, 12, 09:29, 1, 0, 1, 0, 1, Feeling good. A little tired, but nothing detrimental. A work colleague came back from a business trip. I asked him if I looked tired. He said ‘not at all actually’. Then I told him how long it’s been since I had a ‘decent night’s rest’. He also had that annoying question of ‘Why?’…

3, 13, 02:22, 6, 0, 4, 0, 1, Gonna take my nap 3o mins early. It makes sense anyway, as having my pre-work nap a bit earlier eases my morning routine.
